HE TRIED TO FREE HIMSELF FROM HIS PARACHUTE WHILE IN THE SQUARE, ALL AROUND THE CHURCH, THE BATTLE RAGED. HE THEN DECIDED TO PLAY DEAD IN ORDER TO AVOID SERVING AS A TARGET FOR THE ENEMY. AFTER MORE THAN TWO HOURS, A GERMAN SOLDIER CAME TO TAKE IT DOWN. STEELE WAS TREATED AND TAKEN PRISONER, ESCAPED THREE DAYS LATER, REJOINED ALLIED LINES AND WAS TRANSFERRED TO A HOSPITAL IN ENGLAND.
